Description

(S/E)The starting point is the public car park opposite the Barleymow Inn, just a few yards along Sprat's Hatch Lane, grid reference SU777538. Walk up to the Basingstoke Canal from the car park and turn right, under Sprat's Hatch Lane and following the towpath under Stacey's Bridge and Basely's Bridge all the way to the Sprat's Hatch Bridge. Cross over the bridge and follow the footpath past Sprat's Hatch Farm.

(1)Shortly after the path turns sharp left at the farm, look out for a footpath on the right adjacent to the big iron gates to the estate. Follow this path, fenced at either side with pigs, cows and assorted farm animals to see until it joins the main drive. Shortly afterwards a metal gate to the left leads to Tundry Pond. Walk along the bank of this lovely lake all the way to the woods at the far end. Here turn right and follow the path over the canal bridge.

(2)Continue to follow the track to a road, cross and the footpath continues on the other side through a field. Reaching a stile, follow the enclosed path as it twists right, left, right, enters a lane, crosses a stream and turns left between trees up a gentle slope into a field. Waymarks along the way will keep you informed! Cross a stile into a short piece of field and out onto a lane heading east.

(3)Turn left on the road (heading for Crookham village) and then locate the next footpath on the left opposite a thatched garage. Follow this path (can be boggy) keeping close to the right boundary hedge towards Brook Meadow Farm. From the quagmire at the corner of the field nearest the farm, take the farm access road back to the Dogmersfield road. Turn briefly left past a traffic calming measure and cross the road to find a narrow footpath following a stream.

(4)At Pilcot Farm cross the stream on the concrete bridge and then turn immediately right on another footpath heading vaguely north. This path goes left at the end of the fence to the right and shortly crosses from being on the left side of the hedge to being on the right side (watch out for waymarks). Follow the path vaguely west, tree lined for much of the time, past an adjoining path coming in from the left and past a secluded pond. The track turns slightly right and opens up to a farm track to Old Barley Mow Farm. Where the farm track turns right, the footpath continues through a quagmire of a field to the road. Frankly, I took the farm track rather than bog down!

(5)Turn left on the road and return to the start, or pop into the Barleymow!

Great walk, easy in the dry but would be muddy during wet weather. We did this after a meal at the pub and really enjoyed it, only downside is there is really nowhere to sit and enjoy the surroundings.

A great route with varied scenery. Went a little bit wrong twice, but it was because we weren't concentrating! Even so, we completed 6 miles in 2 hrs, so less than the recommended 2.15 hrs for 5 miles.

This was a very nice walk, especially the first half. Directions were spot-on and it was easy to find the route. Nice pub at the end.

Some directions a little confusing, but we didnt get lost!!

Really enjoyed the variety of sights as this takes you by the canal, lake and through fields and farmland. Too many push bikes for my liking as we had to keep stepping off the path to allow them through (especially with social distancing at the moment). However, everyone was considerate....it was really busy in some parts but went on a Saturday

All in all....highly recommend

Good walk some of the instructions were a bit confusing and there are some parts not very exciting walking down drives past houses but on the whole enjoyable not muddy in the summer

Very nice, instructions generally quite good.

Got a little bit confused at these two points:

"Reaching a stile, follow the enclosed path as it twists right, left, right, enters a lane, crosses a stream" - After entering the lane you cross over another stye and another towards the left.

"past an adjoining path coming in from the left and past a secluded pond." - Go straight here (with the path to the left)

Varied walk starting along a pretty part of the canal. A bit muddy in a couple of places.

I did this is as a first easy walk to ease myself back into rambling after too long an absence. I chose a lovely Saturday morning after a couple of days of glorious sun. I really enjoyed it and it was just right in terms of distance and effort for the unfit, middle-aged couch potato that I have become. I would just say that the ground in places was quite boggy - and I disappeared up to me knee in a spot that you are warned about (quagmire) but I didn't believe would be that bad. Glad I had a change of socks and shoes back at the car and a towel to clean the worst off. I was tramping in sodden boots for the last mile or so. The canal start is truly lovely in the dappled morning sun.
