Description

Goathland is a popular spot in the North York Moors, it is a lovely village and the setting for the TV series 'Heartbeat'. The North York Moors Historical Railway stops at the station and there are often steam locomotives puffing their way up or down the line. Part of the walk is above the railway and you will have the opportunity to see this first hand.

Catch the train here and start your walk from the station or park your car to the west of the village just after the Mallyan Spout Hotel.

(S) From your car walk past the Mallyan Spout Hotel on your left and St. Mary's church on your right.

(1) After the church takes the second track on the right, it curves around a grassy area passing beside some houses to a lane. Follow the path along the lane and into fields. Go into a further field with a wood on the right and then through the cross into the corner of a further field which is a camping/caravan site. Follow the track through the campsite and cross a bridleway which is an abandoned railway line. Continue along the road passing Abbot's House and go under the railway bridge.

(2) Take the track and then path to cross the Eller Beck at a small bridge then take the path up beside a smaller stream (often dry) up to the track along the moor edge. Follow the track to the road out of Goathland.

(3) Cross the road and take a path heading slightly downhill with a walled house on your right. Pick up another good path which follows the edge of the moor above the railway cutting. Through gaps in the trees, you may see steam engines. The path turns left away from the main track and heads downhill towards a detached house in the valley. Walk beside the beck to the road, turn right and follow the road until the path cuts off on the left and heads uphill. Walk uphill to a junction with another path.

(4) Turn left, cross a stile and walk with the dry stone wall on your left to a farm track. Take this through the farm, where it becomes a path again. Where the path split, take the left-hand path and veer away from the wall and gently downhill. The railway line is beneath you on your left.

(5) As the path joins a line of trees it splits and crosses the railway. Do not follow this path, instead, go straight ahead beside the trees and passing a farm. You will pick up another farm track which leads to some buildings, one of which is The Model Centre, dedicated to scaling model railways.

(6) Turn left and follow the road down and across a bridge over the railway. The road curves around towards the Beck Hole and the Birch Hall Inn.

(7) Just before the pub take the path on the left-hand side of the Eller Beck and walk through woods up to Thomason Foss, a small waterfall. Retrace your steps back to the road.

(8) Cross the road and turn right just after a building opposite the pub onto a path which leads you to a junction with another disused piece of the railway line, next to the River Esk.

(9) Turn left. Follow the track and then turn off right to follow a path with the river and trees on your right. This path will lead you through farmland and then into woodland towards Mallyan Spout. Ignore the footpath before the waterfall which goes to the Hotel and continue to and then past Mallyan Spout.

(10) Take the path on your left. It's leading you up and out of the woods. Cross a field and back to the road where you have parked your car.

Picked up route from the train station, combination of map and written description sufficient. Lots of benches. Some sections are tough. Best completed after rain as waterfalls are at their best then.

A delightful walk and yes we saw some trains and inevitably missed some when they were out of view! A couple of things to consider, the walk rating should be moderate not easy. Whilst it is relatively short there are some steep climbs with and without steps and the path past the waterfall is non-existent and requires the walker to traverse slippery rocks. Fine for the average individual but not 'easy' for everyone. I would also add a little more to the decryption at the end, 9.5 - After the spout follow the path and cross the river on the wooden bridge and back over the river again via another wooden bridge bringing you back to the left side of the river. Where the path divides turn left and up the steep hill, it does not look like a well trodden path but will lead you to the road at the top where you started. It would be good if we could make suggestions to improve the walk descriptions.

Interesting walk, we only got lost once - instructions after ford, but the bonus was we passed under the railway line instead and got a fantastic view of a steam train

Having walked a lot from Goathland previously, this was probably the first one staying closer to and around Goathland. The Falls weren't new to us but most of the route was. Ideal for one of our party recuperating from illness but enjoyable for all. And there's a very handy sheltered bench overlooking the railway line above Thomason Foss too.

Lovely walk around beautiful part of the country. We were fortunate to see the train pass right under us in the bridge.
Personally, I wouldnt call it easy, some steep inclines and very slippery stone steps.
Most of the time the directions were clear enough, but we got lost at point 3. Directions informed us to turn left off the main path towards a detached house, there were a few paths going left, there was no indication of how far we should walk before taking this turn left. So, unfortunately, we got a bit lost, and used the OS map to find a very little used track to get back where we needed to be.

Walk described as easy, but the first half mile is down large steps and stoned walkway which is not easy.
Walk was interesting and worth the effort

A very enjoyable walk with varying terrain. Parking in Goathland is a nightmare so we parked on Darnholme Lane and walked down to Eller Beck to join the walk. The route description says to follow the beck up the hill but immediately on turning off the road, there is a footbridge and then steps up the hill on the opposite side. This cuts out the corner and is preferable to the very muddy path suggested. The directions for crossing the railway line are also unclear. The route suggestions going down the steep embankment where the path splits but walking straight ahead, ignoring the downhill route, takes you to the same spot. It is then an onward walk of around 1km before you cross the railway line and head downhill on the road into Beck Hole. After this, the walk is straightforward. We didn’t walk along to the waterfall because it was busy and the rocks were really slippy. Instead we took the direct route up the steps into Goathland which brings you up to a pub and a cafe - welcome sights on a hot day!! I agree with others that the route is more strenuous than you might think.

I would think some might find the route a bit more strenuous than the easy rating this route had. It was particularly rocky and a bit slippy at Thomasson Foss and Mallyn Spout.
