(S) From the bus/metro interchange, exit onto Cowan Terrace and walk towards the West Park United Reformed Church. Use the pedestrian crossing to cross to the opposite side of Stockton Road (A1231).
Turn left, following the block paving and then right into Argyle Street. Continue down Argyle Street until it becomes Cresswell Terrace, note the advertising for Vaux Double Maxim on the side of the launderette.
(1) Turn left into Azalea Terrace North heading towards the church in the distance. Continue onto Azalea Terrace South and then Azalea Avenue, note the change in architecture. This will then become The Avenue and then Ashbrooke Road.
(2) Turn right into The Grove by St John's Methodist Church. At the bottom of The Grove, turn left onto West Lawn. Continue down West Lawn with Ashbrooke Recreation Ground on your right until you reach Ashbrooke Road. Turn right onto Ashbrooke Road and follow the road around looking out for Ashbrooke Cottage on your right.
(3) You will eventually see the entrance to Backhouse Park on your left. Follow the main path through Backhouse Park until you reach the exit on the opposite side on Ryhope Road (B1522). Turn left on Ryhope Road and continue walking back on Stockton Road towards the town center.
You will pass a church on your left which is used as a Sikh Temple (Guru Gobind Singh Sikh Temple), look to your right to see Langholm Towers.
(4) Remain on the left-hand side of Ryhope Road and continue into Stockton Road until you reach the Stockton Road URC church. Use the pedestrian crossing here to cross into Park Road turning right.
Follow Park Road around the curve and then cross at the next junction noting the Masonic Hall on your right and Park Road Church (now Oasis@Sunderland). Enter Mowbray Park on the corner left and make your way through the park to Sunderland Museum and Winter Garden. (E)
