Kennet and Avon Canal

Description

(S/E) Starting from the front of the church, with your back to it turn left and shortly follow the road as it takes a sharp bend to the left. On reaching Eastcourt Road, cross over and take the drive to the left of Maple House. Follow the path as it bends around the Cricket Club fields and comes out near the Scout Hall. Take the narrow path straight on to the left of Scout field. Keep straight on as it crosses a field then into a wooded section past houses.

(1) On reaching the A338 turn left and follow the road walking safely on the verge. Almost immediately cross the road and take the right turn and follow the path along right hand edge of the field, past woodland. After a gate, the path divides take the left path and continue to reach a lane in West Grafton. Turn left and follow the lane on a double bend. Opposite Mayfield, take the signed path across a planted field. Keep looking out for stiles with clear red signs. There are several stiles on this stretch and dogs must be kept on the lead.
On crossing a lane the fenced path passes pony paddocks. Next field you cannot see the path so head for stile a bit to the left of a large tree. Keep heading for stiles. Ongoing uphill approaching East Grafton, you cannot see where to aim. Just go straight on and soon you will see 2 houses ahead. You will see the stile just to the right of these. Enter a small pony paddock and bear right towards the shelter and you will see the stile.

(2) Cross the lane and take the path opposite to reach East Grafton Village Green. On reaching that, cross to other side and bear left to follow in front of the houses on the far side. On reaching the A338, cross and turn right on the pavement. Shortly turn left towards Wilton and Windmill. Follow the lane out of the village. After passing Lynden Close, take a path just before a 30 road sign. Turn left to follow the broad path following the left hand field edge and running parallel to the lane.
Good views of Wilton Windmill from here. When the field ends rejoin the lane and follow it downhill into Wilton.

(3) Opposite the pond and on a right-angled bend to right take a path to left then immediately to the left to follow left hand field edge. At a path junction by big trees, bear left to follow the path alongside Wilton Water.

(4) Reach The Kennet and Avon Canal by Crofton Beam Engines. Turn left and follow the Kennet and Avon Canal back to Burbage. At the bridge, leave the canal and follow the track left up to Wolfhall Farm.

(5) After passing through the farmyard, turn right onto lane on right-angled bend. Follow the lane back to Burbage. To reach church front at the junction turn left and shortly reach a gate into churchyard on right. Walk through the churchyard to the front of the church.(S/E)
