Description

(S/E) From Crimdon Dene car park, turn left and follow the footpath in a northwesterly direction past the Dunes cafe. At the end of the access road, continue straight ahead onto the footpath, this path will pass behind the caravan park

(1) The hard surfaced footpath ends at the beach access point (lots of steps) to your right, continue on the same heading along the grass footpath following the cliff top. You will reach another access point to the beach (again lots of steps) at Limekiln Gill, turn left here continuing to follow the Durham Coastal Path towards the railway line.

(2) Go under the railway line and turn left onto the Coast Road.

(3) You will arrive back at the entrance to the car park at Crimdon, the Evergreen Holiday Park will be on your right. As you turn into the car park road you will see a sign for Crimdon Dene on your right, take this footpath down into the dene. Follow the path down underneath Crimdon Viaduct and cross the bridge over Crimdon Beck. Continue to follow the path continues in a southeasterly direction and runs alongside Crimdon Beck on your right. The path will then bend to the left still following Crimdon Beck, ignore the small paths to your left unless you wish to explore the area.

(4) The path will meet the Durham Coastal Path, turn left crossing the bridge over Crimdon Beck and pass the bird hide. There are several access points through the dunes to the beach here if you wish to explore the beach. Follow this path back to the car park (S/E).

Useful Information

Transport: Park at Crimdon Dene car park. Buses stop on the Coast Road outside the caravan park (routes 23 and 24 from Hartlepool to Peterlee). If coming by bus then start the wark at (3).

Facilities: There is a cafe and toilets at the car park.

Accessibility: Some of the route is accessible, I suggest that from the car park you follow the access road back to the coast road and enter Crimdon Dene at (3) and then follow the route under the viaduct and back to the car park.

Always stay careful and alert while following a route. Visorando and the author of this walk cannot be held responsible in the event of an accident during this route.

During the walk or to do/see around

  • Dunes at Crimdon Dene beach, this is more accessible than accessing the beach at one of the points behind the caravan park as this is a long way down many steps.
  • Crimdon Viaduct
  • Bird hide or just bird spotting.
