England Coast Path - Cresswell to Newbiggin Point

From Cresswell, the England Coast path continues to wind its way across the dunes but for much of the walk you will see the Newbiggin Power Station up ahead, the first suggestion of the North East's industrial heritage. The walk finishes at the Newbiggin Maritime Centre which provides information on the maritime history of the area. This is a walk of contrasts.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: England Coast Path - North East Section South Bents to Amble

Description

(S) From Cresswell Ices, walk south east along the road passing Cresswell Village Hall and continuing past Cresswell Holiday Park on your right and a car park on your left. Be careful as there is no footpath on the roadside.

(1) The road will bend to the right at the second small car park. Continue walking past another small car park, you can walk onto the field here and follow the track, however, be aware of grazing animals. This track will then meet the road again where the cliffs come right to the road.

(2) When you reach Cresswell Home Farm you will see a more distinctive footpath to your left with access to the beach, either remain on the road or follow this footpath across the cliff tops. You will pass Ellington Water Treatment Plant and the River Lyne on your right.

(3) If you have been following the cliff top path, rejoin the road and cross the River Lyne on the road bridge. Immediately over the bridge you will see a clearly marked path to your left, follow this path past the reservoirs and the power station.

(4) At the end of the power station you will need to pick your way across the dunes using one of the many tracks, try and stay close to the beach.

(5) As you cross the dunes you will come to the golf course, stay to the left of the golf course and continue to walk around the dunes hugging the cliff tops.

(6) When you reach the golf course club house, turn down the access road, walk past the club house to the roundabout.

(7) At the roundabout, turn left and walk down past the bus shelter following the road to the car park.
The walk ends at the Maritime Centre and Church. (E)
