England Coast Path - Hartlepool Headland to Seaton Carew

This section of the England Coast Path is a varied section, starting on the historic headland, it then follows main roads through modern developments to the marina and on to the seafront at Seaton Carew. The route passes some of the highlights of Hartlepool which are well worth slight diversions.

Description

(S) From Croft Gardens, turn right onto Northgate and follow this street. Continue on Northgate until it becomes West View Road, keep straight at the roundabout.

(1) Bear left into Cleveland Road. Continue down Cleveland Road until you reach the roundabout with the railway bridge over the top of it.

(2) Cross the road and carry straight on passing the car wash on your left onto Marina Way (A179).
Continue walking down Marina Way until you reach the next roundabout.

(3) Cross the road straight and walk in front of the empty row of shops turning left at the end of them onto Harbour Walk which skirts the marina.

(4) This is the best place to do a detour to the National Museum of the Navy, Museum of Hartlepool and Hartlepool Art Gallery. At the end of the marina turn right and walk along the row of restaurants and bars (or follow the edge of the marina car park) until you reach the lock. Look out for the Hartlepool Stag and the most famous resident.

(5) Cross the lock bridge. Walk through the gap in the wall into Slake Terrace. Continue walking until you reach the Yacht Club.

(6) At the Yacht Club turn right onto Fleet Avenue. When you reach the roundabout turn left onto Maritime Avenue, continue until you see a turning circle to your left.

(7) At the circle here you will find access onto the promenade which is marked as a cycle path. Then keep right following the promenade past two car parks, the second of which has public toilets, a play park and a fish restaurant and bar until the promenade meets Coronation Drive.

(8) The path now continues along the roadside onto The Cliff then veers off to the left along the seafront again.
Continue past the beacon, beach huts, picnic area, and further car park. You will arrive at the Clock Tower at the end of your walk. (E)

Useful Information

  • Transport: There are car parks next to St Hilda's Church on the Headland and at Seaton Carew sea front. You will need to take Stage Coach 1 service to York Road, then Stage Coach 7 service from the same stop. There is also a train station in Seaton Carew which serves Hartlepool Station next to the Interchange.
  • Facilities: There are toilets and cafes on the Headland near the start of the walk, then nothing further until you reach the marina where there is a wide choice of bars and restaurants and is a pleasant place for a stop. My favourite restaurant here is Casa del Mar. There are toilets on the sea front at Seaton Carew at the second car park and the Clock Tower along with lots of kiosks, picnic spots and cafes.
  • Accessibility: (to check if wheel chairs can get over the lock bridge) The whole of this route is on tarmac pavement.

Always stay careful and alert while following a route. Visorando and the author of this walk cannot be held responsible in the event of an accident during this route.
