England Coast Path - Souter Lighthouse to Roker

This section begins at Souter Lighthouse and follows the England Coast Path through Whitburn and Seaburn to Roker. The England Coast Path itself runs along the cliff tops and is a narrow footpath from Souter Lighthouse to South Bents where it joins the main public footpath. From there, the promenade can be followed to Roker. The end of this section overlaps with the Weardale Way allowing walkers who have arrived from Weardale to continue their walk.

Description

(S) Start at Souter Lighthouse and pick up the England Coast Path behind the lighthouse or alternatively follow the pavement beside the road. Continue along the coastal path until you reach the bird hide.

(1) There is a path here to the houses and main road (not accessible from the main roadside footpath, you will be walking through Whitburn itself). Continue along the coastal path until you reach the artwork Finn's Labyrinth.

(2) Whitburn beach can be accessed here (not accessible from the main roadside footpath). Continue along the coastal path until you reach the car park. Walk along the access road behind the buildings where you will find a paved footpath.

(3) This will become a promenade. If you have been following the main path through Whitburn you will rejoin the England Coast Path here. Continue along here until you reach the Seaburn Hotel and roundabout.

(4) The promenade splits here into two, the lower promenade leads to the beach, there are steps at the end here to get back to the main footpath or continue along the beach tide permitting. Those unable to use the steps should take the paved footpath along the top of the cliffs. Continue to the bridge at Roker Park.

(5) Cross the bridge, turn left and go down the steps. For those unable to use the steps, cross the road and enter Roker Park. You will find access to the ramp which goes under the bridge to the seafront. You should now be on Marine Walk. Turn right and walk along the promenade until you reach the pier.

(6) If you wish, walk along the pier. When you have reached the lighthouse retrace your steps. Continue to walk to the car park at the end of the promenade. To catch a bus back to the start of the walk, walk up the road behind the car park (Pier View) to the Roker Hotel, you will need bus E1. (E)

Useful Information

  • There is a cafe and toilets at Souter Lightouse (National Trust) when open.
  • There are plenty of cafes, kiosks and restaurants all along the route. The Stack at Seaburn has a particularly good selection of eating places. This is next to Morrisons supermarket.
  • There are public toilets at Seaburn, Roker Park and Roker Sea Front.
  • There is parking at both Souter Lighthouse and Roker Seafront. There are a number of other car parks along the seafront and on road parking at Seaburn. As the Souter Lighthouse car park is small, it may be worth parking at Roker and catching the E1 bus to the start. Equally the walk can be done in either direction.
  • Accessibility: This route can be made wholly accessible with a detour through Whitburn itself following the cycle path and although it may not give the same impression as walking along the cliff tops, Whitburn is a pretty place with shops and cafes to break the walk. A second slight detour will be needed at Roker Park to access the promenade.
  • The route is clearly marked for its entire length with small brown signs with the Acorn logo and the letters ECP (England Coast Path).
  • Note: The section between Souter Lighthouse and Whitburn (3) was very muddy following raing and despite it being designated a footpath, there were many cyclists so the track is very rutted. There are also cliff falls here so be aware of the edge of the cliffs, particularly after rain.

Always stay careful and alert while following a route. Visorando and the author of this walk cannot be held responsible in the event of an accident during this route.
