Ethy woods circular walk from Lerryn

This easy, well-marked route (but many stiles) follows open fields ways, paths and tracks in Ethy woods (National Trust) and along the lovely River Lerryn. You can discover St Winnow Church as well during this walk. Be careful, this walk is better at low tide because the footpath along St Winnow Church and the river can be partly submerged.

Confluence of the rivers Fowey and Lerryn
Lerryn from Ethy Wood
St Winnow Church
River Fowey from the hill

Description

Park your car at Lerryn car park (close to the post office).

(S/E) From the car park, at low tide, cross the river using stones and go up Brandy Lane in front of you. (Or at high tide, head to the main road at the entrance of the car park, turn left, go past Lerryn Memorial Hall then bear left crossing the lovely bride, finally turn left after Bridge House. At the end of the narrow road impracticable for lorries (signpost), turn right).

(1) Continue straight this steep lane until you reach Lerryn View dead-end on your left (notice big signpost "Slowdown children playing"). follow the road across the residential area, then take the narrow public footpath on you right along the last house n°13 (ignore the Ethy National Trust path entering the forest in front of you!). Walk the field diagonally left heading to the lonely tree, then you enter another field and quickly a second one after a few meters on our right. Continue again diagonally left this field until you reach a small gate (and stone steps behind) entering the forest. Go down the main obvious path leading to a gravel track.

(2) Bear right onto this track which bends left going up between old stone buildings and turn right at the junction. A few meters from this junction, climb left towards stairs and stile. Ascent the meadow along the hedge until another stile, then another again (follow the yellow arrow). Go through the hedge and bear slightly left towards a gate and a yellow-painted post. Past this stile, continue straight along the hedge enjoying views over hills around you. After the next stile, you can already catch a sight of the River Fowey.

(3) Continue down the slope and cross straight two metallic barriers at the junction. The path descends towards St Winnow church and finally reaches the village. Turn left onto the road, then go down right to the track heading to the River Fowey (Cast a glance at the church on your way).

(4) From this point, you need to walk left along the edge for 200 meters (can be submerged at high tide!!!) heading to trees(small passage) leading to a small footbridge. Past a stile, continue the path along the meadow until you reach Ethy Woods (Forestry Commission).

(5) Follow this large gravel track until you reach a nice viewpoint over the confluence (River Lerryn and River Fowey).

(6) Continue this track for half a mile and turn right to a pleasant shortcut along the river.

(7) You are back to the main track for 200 metres, then turn right again to a second shortcut. You cross a footbridge and go through a low wall until you reach a junction (yellow arrows signpost). Bear right onto the flat path still along the river. The path joins a track and goes past houses on the left heading to stepping stones and the car park(S/E)

A good walk on a variety of surfaces. Heifers in one field so stick to the path. Great views. Quiet until the return walk along the river. Seats in St Winnow church provide a resting place whilst enjoying the view across the river.
