Description

The start is at the entrance of Saint-Michel d'Euzet. There is a small car park on the right, just at the entrance of the village.

From the car park, climb towards the village centre.

(1) At the washhouse and to the Byzantine-style church, turn left onto Place Jean Jaurès and continue onto Rue
Tuchins then Rue de l’Apparan towards Roque-sur-Cèze.

(2) At the end of Rue de l’Apparan, do not go straight onto the Chemin de l’Apparan but fork off to the
left towards Roque-sur-Cèze.

(3) At the cross, head down slightly to the left towards La Roque. The small road continues between vines, ignore a path starting on the right. Arriving at the RD980 (Route de Barjac drive), cut across and take the path opposite through the vineyards. A nice view over the village of La Roque over the vineyards.

(4) At the junction, turn left towards the village and along the Cèze. On the right is a
small restaurant for lunch by the river.
Take a right on Pont Charles Martel. The latter crosses the Cèze river and enters the village of La
Roque. Enjoy the headlands on either side of the bridge and admire the scenery.

(5) Turn right after the bridge and continue under the trees and enjoy the view of the village.
Along the banks you can have a picnic, rent canoes or bathe. Continue
on the right to a fork.

(6) At a fork, turn right onto Chemin du Plan. The walk is between hills and vineyards. For this
part, the path is marked (Yellow).

(7) At the intersection of Chemin du Mas, continue right on Chemin du Plan. At the T-junction, turn left. Reach a crossroads near the river.

(8) Here, the path is not marked. Turn left sharply on the path uphill. The walk is in a wooded area and the trail goes up for a few kilometres towards the castle, keeping south. At the fork, continue straight (south), the path climbs gently along the Serre of Gavot. Just after the ruined house on the left, you come to an intersection.

(9) Turn left and continue in the wooded area to the Château de la Roque. Warning: this is private property. Pass the outside wall and follow the path on the right.

(10) Take the path that climbs to the right and follow along the Serre de Martin. Turn left at the junction and head down to the village.

(11) At the town hall, turn right on Grand Rue.

(12) Turn right at the intersection and then left to reach the bridge over the Cèze and finish the loop around La Roque.

(5) Take the outbound path towards Saint-Michel-d'Euzet

Useful Information

no difficulty but beware of the heat: one part is wooded, the rest is through the vineyards without shade. The time reflects a leisurely pace with stops to admire the scenery.

Opportunity to eat in the village of La Roque or picnic along the Cèze at the entrance of the village.

Always stay careful and alert while following a route. Visorando and the author of this walk cannot be held responsible in the event of an accident during this route.

During the walk or to do/see around

The neo-Byzantine church of Saint-Michel is interesting. You will discover in the two villages some very pretty washhouses.
The village of La Roque is worth a visit. If you stay a while, there are places to eat, bathing spots from the village to the waterfalls and canoeing on the Cèze.
During the ascent to the castle of La Roque (loop around the village), there are beautiful views of the Ceze below and the small mountains around the village.

Hi, We did this walk for the second time today, the first being on 25th October last year. On that first occasion, the grape vines were turning red and the weather was spectacular. It is one of the best walks I have ever done. Today, despite being mid winter, clear skies meant we had another sensational walk. We took a friend, a seasoned randonneur, who also loved it.
I think it is worth mentioning at the end of point 7, you should remove the last sentence "Reach a crossroads by the river" and replace it with "Continue until you reach Chemin du Recost and turn sharp left into it."
Point 8 should then drop the first two sentences to be replaced with simply "Continue on the path uphill." You can then go back to your instructions "The walk is in a wooded etc etc."
I think the sign for Chemin du Recost is new, which is why it wasn't mentioned in the original instructions.
The only other thing I would mention is that once you have crossed back over the Ceze, at the end of point 12, instead of turning left to retrace your steps, you can turn right and go past the Cascades de Sautadet and there is a yellow marked path back to Saint Michel d'Euzet. It is not always clearly marked, but you can often get a glimpse of the village so with some basic directional skills, you will find your way home. Going this way means you will follow the Ceze closely and then encounter lavender fields and stone fruit orchards, as well as entering Saint Michel past the historic cemetery.
I hope that helps.
