Description

(S)Our base was Glendalough village, so we got a ride to Glenmacnass waterfall. Otherwise you can park in Glenmacnass car park just off Military Road. After admiring the view we head up Glenmacrass river. The trail is very wet muddy and wet, but the walk is pleasant.

(1)Turn left along the footpath beside the small stream marked as Lough Brook which leads up to nice surprise - heart shaped Lough Ouler. The trail goes round the side of Lough Ouler and then sharp uphill. Ignore the footpaths off to either side and continue up to Tonelagee.

(2)We didn't get the view down from the top as there was serious fog. It is good to have compass on top, because there are several trails leading down and it is not very clear which way to go. Take the footpath southwest toward Wicklow gap. Beautiful view appears when descending.

(3)Cross the road at Wicklow Gap and take the footpath opposite to join St. Kevin's Way. Follow St. Kevin's way southeast. If the footpath is too swampy, as it was for us, you can then take the next road to the right, leading you around Lough Nahanagan. The Lough is very industrial looking, but we saw a lot of deer in this area. Leave the lough along a footpath to the east, then at the fork take the higher trail and hike along the side of the Camaderry mountain towards Glendasan quarry.

From Glendasan Quarry take the signed path of St. Kevin's way leading to Glendalough village and Glendalough monastic site(E).
