Start : If you stay in Patterdale when you do this walk, you will have to walk from Patterdale to Glenridding first in order to catch the steamer. Alternatively, if you are starting from Glenridding you will have to walk back from Patterdale alongside the road (path).
(S) The walk starts from the pier at Howtown. The best way to get to the start is by using one the Ullswater Steamers from Glenridding. (You may have to book in peak season)
From the end of the pier take the path on the right so that you have the lake on your right hand side, look out for a gate on the left go through this and walk to another gate and junction with a track.
(1) Go through the gate and turn right onto the track. Follow this as it contours the lower slopes of Hallin Fell with some lovely views along the length of Ullswater on your right. The track passes through Hallinhag Wood and then across fields to the delightful hamlet of Sandwick where it joins the road.
(2) Turn left and walk along the road for a short distance until past the last house on the right. Then turn right off the road and take a track up a grassy bank with a wall on your right hand side.Continue to follow the good track with fell side on your left and on your right, fields leading down to the lake. Pass the Lowther Barn Tea room and then cross stream coming down from Sleet fell (marked Ford on the OS map but often dry in the summer)
(3) Continue along the track, (ignoring the track on the left, just after the ford, leading up Place Fell) cross another stream below Scalehouse Force and continue contouring the fell side until entering light woodland on the lower north west slopes of Place Fell. Take the track through the woodland to the junction with another track on the left.
(4) Ignore the track on the left which ascends a shallow valley and continue straight on to Silver Point at waypoint (5), which is a headland. This is a good place to stray rightwards from the track in order to get good views and eat your picnic if you brought one. When you are ready head back to the track (there are many small tracks leading through the bracken) and continue in a southerly direction. The track will eventually arrive at Side Farm
(6) At Side Farm turn right and walk through the farmyard and onto the farm track to Patterdale. You can walk all the way along this to join the village beside the climbing hut but an extra bit of interest can be had by taking the track beside the river which starts next to the bridge.
(7) Just before the bridge take the track on the left which runs beside the river. It will lead up to a minor road.
(8) At the road turn right and walk over the bridge to the main Patterdale road. Turn right and walk along this to the White Lion Hotel. (E)
If you started from Glenridding you will have to walk back along the pavement/path which swaps from one side of the road to the other.
