Description

Start : Ferry slip Isle of Iona. Grid ref. NM 28655 24001

(S/E) From the ferry slip, turn right (North-West), following signs "To the Abbey and Nunnery".

(1) After passing the Spar and craft shop, turn right (North) to walk through the Nunnery and out onto the road at the other side.

Walk along the road for 1.6km, passing Iona Abbey along the way (take a de-tour to visit if you wish!).

At the end of the road next to Adrionra, continue ahead (North-East) onto a gravel path and through a gate. Follow the fenceline North.

(2) Follow any of the paths right (North-East) across the grass and down onto the white sands of Traigh Bhan.

(3) Walk to the N end of the beach, turning inland via a wooden gate.

(4) Follow the grassy path over the hill in a W direction to another gate. This leads you back onto the gravel path from before.

Follow the path right (West) towards the beach Traigh an t-Suidhe.

Turn left to walk West to the far end of the beach and up onto a grassy hillside.

From here follow faint grassy paths along the clifftops in a general South-West direction for approx. 2km.

(5) It leads you down into a small bay with a flat, grassy field area. The path seems to run out here. Turn left (South-East) to cross the field, heading for a gap in the rocks.

(6) A short 17m later you will arrive at the peaceful small bay of Port Ban.

From here continue in a general South-East direction.

(7) Soon after you will be walking along the grassy embankment next to the Bay at the Back of the Ocean (Camas Cuil an t-Saimh). There will be a fence on your left-hand side.

(8) Shortly after the end of the fenceline, turn left (East) to cross Iona Golf Course and onto a surfaced road.

Follow the road for 2km back to the ferry slip (S/E)
