Description

(S/E) The walk starts at the bottom of Keld village. Take the footpath South East towards Muker. The church should be on your right-hand side and River Swale on your left-hand side. Follow this path until reaching a Y junction where you keep going straight.

(1) When you reach a second junction here you can take the left-hand path, followed by the path left signpost Kisdon Falls, the path is steep and rocky but well worth the effort.
Otherwise, carry on straight ahead and go to (3) The footpath takes you down the Swaledale Valley.

(2) From the falls follow a track that leads you back to the main footpath you just came from and then keep left. Alternatively looking down stream from the falls there is a less steep track that follows the side of Birk Hill Scar joining the main path.

(3) Keep left onto the main footpath this takes you down the Swaledale Valley. Carry on walking straight ahead (keeping the Swale on your left-hand side) until you reach a footbridge over the River Swale.

(4) Cross over the River Swale and turn right following a clear footpath to Ivelet and onto Gunnerside. Walk straight ahead always keeping River Swale on your right until you reach Gunnerside. The last junction before Gunnerside, the path leads towards some bungalows and a lane leads to the square in Gunnerside.

(5) When you get to Gunning Lane (B6270), turn left on the lane and carry on following this road, cross Gunnerside Beck bridge and turn immediately left up Gunnersidegill. The path climbs steadily up the Gill on the right to the old lead mining settlements. Always go straight ahead keeping Gunnerside Beck stream on your left-hand side until you reach some buildings (Blakethwaite Smelt Mill) where you will cross the Gunnerside Beck Stream.

(6) Take the planked footbridge on your left, over the stream and continue up Blind Gill (ignore a clear path on the left as this would take you back to Gunnerside). As you make your way up Blind Gill, you are looking for an indistinct path leading left out of the gill up a steep bank. The path opens to a clear path that goes up hill by North Hush.

(7) The path meets a well made stone track turn right and follow the track.

(8) The track turns left but you need to take the clear footpath right that leads down a gully on a well made stone path to a stone bridge.

(9) Go over the bridge turning left and stay on the upper path, giving superb views down Swaledale this path leads to the ruins of Crackpot Hall.

(10) Turn right and follow the path to the falls then over the bridge crossing the Swale and up the steep path that takes you back up to the village of Keld. (S/E)
