Lindow Common to Rossmere

Lindow Common is a very popular area and is well worth a visit in its own right. The common is crisscrossed by numerous footpaths and contains the Black Lake. It’s worthwhile exploring areas away from Black Lake where there are some small pools and expanses of heather. There is a lot of conservation work being carried out on the common which is designed to keep its open aspect and to protect wildlife and fauna. It is designated as a site of special scientific interest.

Description

(S/E) Take the footpath off the common and turn right into Racecourse Road.

(1) Turn left along Sandy Lane (a track) and then turn left along Mobberley Road.

(2) After a row of three houses turn left and follow the footpath until coming to a small track just after a house on the left.

(3) Turn left and follow the track over the now landscaped rubbish dump.

(4) Turn right after reaching the top of the hill along the footpath towards Eccups Lane. These footpaths towards Rossmere are beautiful in the spring with lots of Forget-Me-Nots and other wildflowers.

(5) Turn right at Eccups Lane and left after the mobile home estate. Follow the footpath to Rossmere. Turn left and follow the footpath around the mere until reaching Newgate Lane.

(6) Turn left and follow the road back up to Lindow Common and the start of the walk. For a shorter route turn left off Sandy Lane down Graves Road. This leads past the allotments on the right and then rejoins the longer route on top of the old rubbish dump. There are photographs of both routes.(S/E)

Useful Information

There is some upset in the local community about new restrictions and reduced access to some areas of the common and with the extent of the conservation work. The area is historically associated with Gypsies and horse-trading. Lindow Common was the site of a racecourse, hence the name of Racecourse Road which runs around it.
