Loch of the Lowes Path

A lovely walk through coniferous and deciduous woodland and open pasture, on the way to Loch of the Lowes. Use the hides at the Scottish Wildlife Trust’s visitor centre to sneak a peek in season at overwintering geese, ducks including goldeneye and the striking, head shaking courtship of the great crested grebe. A camera provides live and recorded images of the famous osprey nest in season and other local wildlife.

Description

(S/E) Park at Loch of Lowes car park. Follow the path heading southeast parallel to C429 until you see a path on your right hand side.

(1) Turn right here and stay on the left at the next fork. Follow this path until you arrive at Brae Street.

(2) Turn right into Brae Street.

(3) At Bridge Street/Atholl Street, turn right. Later, this street becomes Dunkeld Road and then, Blairgowrie Road, which are both usually busy.

(4) After the post office, turn left. Continue on this path until the first intersection of paths, where you go right. At the next intersection, go right, and almost immediately, right again. Keep going south to rejoin A923.

(5) At Dunkel Road, turn left for about 300 metres. When you see the main path on your right, take it. Take care as the path crosses the busy A923.

(6) After you pass the car park, turn left. Keep following the main path until you are back at the Loch of Lowes Path you used at the beginning of the walk. There, turn left and retrace your step to the car park.(S/E)

Started from the Calley car park - the track up to it must be taken slowly to be kind to your car's suspension. The walk is well signposted and good going until beyond the golf course. After that a bit watery underfoot (and over) in places; the preceding days had seen some heavy rain. We went back on the road as far as the golf course entrance.to stay as dry as possible. An enjoyable walk with the loch and its inhabitants a good reward for our efforts.
Dunkeld was as busy as ever so snacked over in Birnam.

The first part into Dunkeld is interesting and easy to follow. However, the description from Dunkeld for the return walk is completely misleading. You have to walk some way out of town before turning right onto the Blairgowrie Road and then find the Cally Car Park, which isn't mentioned in the walk description. On the day, we couldn't decipher the description so returned by the first part of the route. Needs to be re-written carefully. Unless you possess a proper GPS device, those waypoints are useless. As for the "busy road", suicidal might be a better choice.
