Under Treffry Viaduct
The River Par from the path
The Wheel Pit
The incline

Description

Park your car at Luxulyan Valley car park (close to Treffry viaduct).

(S/E) From the Luxulyan Valley information signpost, take the path on the right close to the road and go under the viaduct.

(1) Continue the path as it takes away from the road until you reach a junction (prohibition signpost in front of you). Bear right down the path then left ignoring the small footbridge on your right.

(2) Walk along the River Par, pass under the railway bridge, then you cross a concrete bridge until you reach Trevanney china clay kiln which was in operation between the 1920s and 1960s.
Continue straight, the path cross again the river and the railway leading to a junction. Bear sharply left (160°) towards a wooden barrier and an old signpost "Warning take care"(about industrial remains and water courses).

(3) Climb this path named "the inclined" (built-in 1840 and used by stone laden trams) until you reach a bridge above the old inclined tramway. Go up left before the bridge, cross it and turn left at the T-junction. The path goes up and joins a canal. Turn left, walk along the canal before the stone bridge until you reach another junction (forbidden for cycling and horse riding signpost).

(4) Bear right, climbing the large path (in fact, the end of the inclined tramway), go past ruins leading to The Wheel Pit viewpoint. It's a 30 feet high site from the 19th century. The water wheel has been designed to wind trams up the incline and, from 1890, to operate china stone mills. Go straight ahead following the flat track along the Carmears leat leading to Treffry Viaduct. Enjoy the view over the valley from this viaduct built between 1839 and 1842 to carry a horse-drawn tramway and also serves as an aqueduct.

(5) Retrace your steps, turn left, go through the low wall using stone steps, continue across the stunning beech wood until you reach a footbridge. Cross it, turn right and you are back to the information signpost on your left where you started the walk.(S/E)
