Description

Park at Middleton Top car park (fee apply).

(S/E) From Middleton Top car park, walk to High Peak Trail located behind the visitor center (Where the bike rental is). There is an information board there. With the building on your back, walk South-West with the old carry on your right-hand side. This is an old railway turned into a cycle path.

Walk straight on, when you reach a gate, carry straight on the High Peak Trail crossing the road then straight again through the other gate. You will spot some electric pylons onto your right to be sure you are on the good path.

(1) Keep going West along the High Peak trail going through Hupton tunnel. You will pass a carry on your right-hand side, Hopton Wood winding engine on your left-hand side along the way, then Hopton incline. From Hopton Incline, you will start to spot windmills past a railway cottage on your right-hand side before reaching a road.

(2) From the Railway cottage, cross the road straight (West-North-West) with care then go through a wooden gate. Keep following the High Peak Trail. Eventually, you will start to see some rocks on your right-hand side on the top of a hill. That's your goal, Harboro' Rocks.

(3) At some point, you will reach an industry on your left-hand side and a signpost opposite with a gate offering you a detour to Harboro' Rocks. Turn right (North) here if you wish to explore and enjoy a 360° view à a trig point then come back here. Apparently, there is a cave hidden somewhere in that area.

(4) Otherwise, carry straight on the High Peak Trail past some ruins on your right-hand side and some electric lines. Keep going keeping aware of a stile hidden in the wall and trees on your right (North) joining the Limestone way.

(5) When you find that stile, cross it then another one to join the field. Walk North enjoying the view. Eventually, reach an iron gate where you turn right (North-East) with now a wall on your right-hand side. Then walk to a stile located at the corner of the next field (North-East) ignoring a gate on your left. Walk left (North-West) to a wooden stile. when you crossed it, walk diagonally (North-East) across the field. You get some nice views of the valley.

At some stage, when you see some pylons, cross the field towards them then carry on North-East still on the Limestone Way.

(6) When you see a gate in front of you, past it and turn right (South-East) and keep the wall on your left-hand side. Pass another gate and carry straight on (South-East) enjoying the nice views. Go straight through a gate and straight to another one keeping South-East.

At some point keep the wall on your left-hand side. Going uphill you get nice views backwards keeping the wall on your left-hand side. Carry on the same way until you go downhill to a junction where you are located almost under the windmills.

(7) Just after a stile, a few meters before reaching the gate that gives access to the windmill, turn right (West) keeping a wired fence on your right-hand side. Carry straight on West and just past a gate turn left (South) keeping the wired fence on your left-hand side. You get great views of the windmills on your right before reaching a gate and a wooden stile. Carry on downhill South back to the High Peak Trail that you walked before.

(8) At the junction with the High Peak Trail, retrace your steps, turn left (East) and walk straight forward back to Middleton Top car park. (S/E)
