Description

(S/E) From The Navigation INN door, facing the car park and canal basin, turn right to the road. Turn left and cross the road bridge over the canal basin, and shortly afterwards a bridge over the A6.

(1) Swing left into Western Lane. Follow the road as it swings right then, when it bends left, turn into a drive on your right. Turn immediately right onto a footpath beside a grit bin. Head up the field beyond; officially the path goes through the middle of some overgrown allotments and over a stone step stile; if necessary, bypass these through a gap on the right.

(2) When you reach the wall at the top, turn right and follow it, crossing another along the way, until the wall curves left under some telegraph lines. Here, strike out right, through a gap in a barbed-wire fence and across the slope below the farm; once over the brow of the hill you will see a stone step stile in the far wall, left of a gateway.

Once over this stile, aim for the right-hand end of some trees opposite, well to the left of the buildings. Beyond these trees, follow the wall. Climb a step-stile over a wall and drop down and up as you cross the Roosdyche beyond.

(3) Beyond a ladder stile, keep along the wall on your left. Cross a second ladder stile, then ignore a stile into private gardens on the right. When you reach a track opposite Whaley Bridge Cricket Club, turn right (downhill).

This track becomes metalled and passes a house entrance with stone gateposts. Just before a large stone building, follow a short walled and metalled path down the slope on the right. Turn left at the end, past a tower-like building (a former colliery winding house).

(4) At the bottom of Bings Road, turn right then immediately right again along the route of the former Cromford and High Peak Railway. Cross the road at the bottom and a bridge over the River Goyt beyond and pass a car park to reach the canal basin.

(5) Pass to the right of the wharf building and cross a footbridge over a spillway to join the canal towpath. Follow the towpath under a modern bridge carrying the Tesco access road. When you reach the canal junction, cross the footbridge and turn right to follow the Bugsworth Arm, shortly passing under the A6. Follow the towpath to Bugsworth Basin and The Navigation INN. (S/E)
