Description

(S) Start the walk at Pontefract Bus Station. Turn left out of the Bus Station and walk down Horsefair. Keep straight on passing Micklegate Methodist Church until you reach the gates of Pontefract Castle. To the right of the castle entrance a flagged path descends alongside the castle grounds to join a cobbled street. Where this forks keep right. Cross the road with care and pass to the left of the ruined church. At the next main road (A645) bear left and continue on the left hand side of the road. Pass under a disused railway viaduct and just past the Cobblers pub bear left up Sowgate lane with the Fire/Police station and new Houses on the left. Bear slowly right and continue past Pear Tree Farm then turn right and pass under a railway line.

(1) When you reach the A645, turn right for 40 metres and cross carefully onto a broad grassy track with a hedge on the right. Follow this track/path for some considerable distance, past some poplar trees on the right ignoring paths to the left and right. The track soon bends right to join a road.

(2) Turn left and just after Baghill Nurseries turn right across fields. Go straight ahead towards a group of trees on a ridge. Bear left, until the path turns into a track, descend down the track past Church farm towards Carleton church. Turn left for 200 metres and turn right down Moor Lane. Continue until the road turns into a track. Where the track crosses a stream, turn left with the stream on your left. The path bears right and a high wire fence is on the left. At the end of the fence turn left across a track, continue with a fence on the left to a kissing gate. Bear left across the field to another kissing gate. Cross the next field and walk down Church Lane.

(3) Turn left down Darrington Road. Where the road starts to bear left take a bridleway to the right, an unsurfaced track. After about 200 metres cross a stile by a gate on the right and follow the hedge on your right towards a stile in a hedge. Cross the stile onto the verge of the A639. Turn left along this busy road and go up the hill. After about 200 metres cross the road with care and take Whitegates Lane forking right. At the entrance gate to a large house bear left. Follow the path and descend between two hedges to Rigg Lane. Cross the lane with care and follow the road opposite south between farm buildings.

(4) Go past the water works to the concrete bridge over the river Went. Before the bridge turn left and follow the riverside path until another footbridge enables you to cross the river. A path leads straight ahead through the fields. At Thorpe Audlin, follow the track through the houses, cross straight over the next road onto a track, which leads to a main road (B6474).(E)
