Description

(S/E) From the centre of Buttermere Village in front of Bridge Hotel on B5289, take the footpath leading up (North-East) through Ghyll Woods, once, at the top of the woods, you'll see a path leading off to the left (West) heading onto Grassgarth Coppice. Climb up this steeper section of the bank until at the main crossroads.

(1) From here you can head straight up (North-North-East) following the clearest path onto the tongue of Rannerdale Knotts, or take the smaller grass paths off straight ahead too. They all lead onto the main ridge of Rannerdale Knotts, just at different points.

(2) Once on top of the ridge line, you can see the clear path ahead (West-North-West) which you follow all the way to the top of the fell. There is some scrambling along the way towards the end of the ridge but this is nothing too taxing at all. Then marvel at the views from the top of Rannerdale Knotts.

(3) From Rannerdale Knotts, on the way down, head over the top of the fell and you'll see a clear path leading down and to the left (South-West). Keep on this route and it does get very steep in some sections. It becomes steps on the steepest of declines so be careful on a wet day to not slip and keep following this path down and again to the left (South) onto the side of the fell near the road. Continue on this route until it hits the road (B5289).

(4) At the road, follow this until a turning on your right with a signpost appears heading into some more woods.

(5) Take this path off (West) and follow the woods down towards the stream leading into Crummock Water. Head towards the shoreline and then cross the bridge that comes into view. From here turn left (South-East) again and follow the path that leads towards Buttermere and alongside the campsite.

(6) This takes you into the main car park at Buttermere where there are toilets located too, and then at the end of the car park you arrive back to the centre of Buttermere Village. (S/E)

During the walk or to do/see around

  • From the top of Rannderdale Knotts, you'll be able to see Buttermere and Crummock Water, as well as Loweswater in the distance too.
  • There are plenty of other Wainwrights around the area, so it's a good spot for checking out the map for other routes onto these too. One of the main highlights is Haystacks to the far end of Buttermere.
