Description

(S/E) Stepping stones into the field over the wall just north of the Bridge. Stepping into the meadow follow the well defined footpath climbing to pass an ancient Horse Chestnut tree. Following the wall on your left high above the river, cross an open field down towards the remains of the old church.

(1) Remains of Saint Mary's Church, you can enter and depart the church grounds by gate/stile either side leaving the church wall head down towards the river bank pass a gate in the forest and follow along the tree lined path until you exit the forest into fields.

(2) Leave the forest gradually climbing up to a corner of two walls, taking the right hand side of the wall in front pass through another two styles and enter the forest on the banks of the river again, follow the path along the river bank until you you exit the forest and walk along the edge to come to a blacktop road.

(3) Joining the road turn left and walk down to Brignal Mill (Now a Private Residence) on reaching the house turn left follow a wall down to the end then turn right to come back onto the house, enter a gate at the rear of the house turning directly to approach the river, taking the footpath to the right to cross the ancient bridge, over the bridge the path swings right then left upwards bringing you to a junction in the path.

(4) Forest Branch, take the path to the left and follow the river downstream crossing Henning Scar and Gill beck, just after Gill beck the footpath climbs steeply uphill to reach a wall before following the wall on the forest side until you exit at a gate into fields.

(5) Departing the forest after entering the field turn left crossing one wall to exit at a gate below Crook's House.
passing through the gate follow the farm track to bring you out to the left of the farm buildings crossing an open paddock directly in front to join another track turning left.

(6) Pass the gate into the farm lane and continue to enter the road beyond Wilsons house.

(7) Following straight on along the road bear left, continuing on the road downhill till 100m passed the entrance to Eastwood Hall.

(8) Turn Left off the road over a style into the forest, then right downhill to a wall, cross the wall into the field via the gate, crossing the centre of the field to pass between two buildings and out onto the main road(S/E)

Useful Information

Parking may be difficult on busy days, though mid-week parking at the hotel is usually acceptable.
Better off road parking at the North end of the village or just along the lane to Brignall.
Hotel in Greta offers food and drink on completion of a walk either in Bar or Beer garden.
Full walking equipment required.
Food and drink for the day required.
The footpath is steep in places and care needed if muddy.

During the walk or to do/see around

St Mary's church remains is worth spending a few minutes over.
A short walk up to the Medieval village of Brignall is worth the effort if you have the time.
Any area along the river banks offers a good vantage point to watch the abundance of wildlife.
A climb out of Hening Scar to view the remains of Scargill castle is recommended, though the grounds are private, so viewing from the road only.
