(S) Park at the castle car park signposted from the village. Exit the car park and turn right down the street to The Camelot inn. Turn left immediately before the pub into Folly Lane. This is part of the Leland Trail. The road turns into a track which takes you into a field. The official path turns right here over a stile and then left but you can simply go straight across the field keeping the field boundary on your right. At the end of the field is a gate on the right which opens into a lane.
(1)Turn left on the lane to enter the village of Sutton Montis. Go past the church and turn left on the road. Look for a farm track on the right about 200 yards along. Turn right into the track and follow it until you reach another road. (You can bypass the farm track by taking the footpath on the right at the entrance to Sutton Montis, if you prefer).
(2) Turn right onto the road, at the T-junction go diagonally right onto a bridleway. This is part of The Monarch's Way. Follow the trail through a gate and then up and around to the right of Parrock Hill. You are now on Corton ridge. Basically just keep straight on. There are a number of options for shortening the walk by taking a left turn, otherwise carry straight on until you find yourself on a farm track.
(3) When you reach the farm track, there is a farm gate on the right, but you will turn left down the track. This turns into a tarmac road and at the bottom you will come out at Stafford Green Farm. If it's very wet follow the road as in the map, otherwise see (4) below.
(4) Immediately before the farm is a bridge over a stream. Turn left through a gate immediately before the bridge. Go straight ahead across two fields to a road by a farm. Turn right at the road and left at the T-junction into Corton Denahm. Go past the pub and church. Look for the Old Post office (red telephone box) on the left. Go up the hill past the Old P.O. for about 150m and look for a track/bridlepath on the right.
(5) Turn right into this track and when it splits take the right hand fork. This takes you up and around in a large zig zag to Corton Hill Beacon - the highest point on Corton Ridge. You can't miss the beacon, it has a triangulation point and a large aircraft warning light! There is a circular stone bench where you can sit and take in the amazing views. We also watched two Red Kites performing some spectacular aerobatics. From the Beacon double back to the gate and turn left with the fence on your right.
(6) Turn left onto the road and follow it to a T-junction. At the T-junction turn right and then immediately right again into Whitcombe. The road turns into a track. Follow this track. The track looks like it leads into a field but actually continues to the right. Follow it up the hill to its end and turn left around the side of the hill. Carry straight on across the fields until you come to a footbridge over a stream. Cross the bridge and go diagonally up the hill to a gate which opens onto a road.
(7)Turn right at the road and immediately bear left to head back to The Camelot Inn. On the way back to the car park you will see a lane on the left signposted to the castle. This will take you up past an information sign to Cadbury Castle where you can walk what remains of the earthen ramparts and imagine Arthurian Somerset. Go back the way you came to the car park
