Gorran Haven from Maenease Point

Description

Park your car at Penare National Trust Car Park.

(S/E) From the end of the car park, cross over the road following the footpath to Hemmick Beach (1/2mile). Past a gate, the path opens onto the coast and the stunning Hemmick Beach. Turn left joining the coastal path until you reach a junction signpost. Go straight ahead "Coast path Dodman Point 1/4mile" heading to a huge granite cross you can catch sight of.

(1) From this cross (built as a navigational aid by the vicar of Caerhays in 1896), go left for a quick way and return to the cute watch house (18th century) and learn about the Dodman History (The National Trust information sign).
Go back to the coastal path overlooking the wild Vault Beach until you reach the next junction.

(2) Turn right following "Coast path Gorran Haven 1 3/4m" and then, a second time (1 1/2mile) until you reach a gate (Vault Beach information). At the next fork, turn left ignoring the path going down to the beach. Past Maenease Point, you can already catch sight of Gorran Haven cliffs. Splendid! (path close to the cliff edge, be careful) Descend the path to Gorran Haven, go past a fish and chips on your left and turn right into Canton Street (dead-end heading to the sea).

(3) Turn left into Church Street close to the Mermaid Cafe until you reach a junction past the church. Turn right into Cliff Road, go past Beach Cliff house but don't forget to bear right to the footpath 'Portmellon 2 1/2m" in front of a dead-end signpost and Menton house. Continue this road until you reach again the footpath next to Perhaven house. Enter a meadow past a stile, walk along the fence, go through a few gates (look back to see the view over cliffs and Gorran Haven!).

(4) Continue this coastal path admiring this small peninsula named Chapel Point until you join a new rocky track close to the beach. Cross over the driveway (follow the yellow arrow), go across the meadow which opens onto Portmellon and Mevagissey. This path leads to Chapel Point Lane.

(5) In Portmellion, turn right down at the T-junction heading towards the harbour, then turn left before Beachhouse (large house with blue shutters). Go straight across the boatyard and the residential area until you see a public footpath and a gate slightly right. Enter the open meadow, cross a bridge/stairs leading to a pleasant path in woods.

(6) At the junction, cross over the road, follow the public footpath to St Goran's Church (1 mile). Climb a very steep section to the left past the gate. Go through rocky steps, go across fields joining a track next to a house.

(7) Bear left onto this track, then turn right at the T-junction in Gorran Churchtown ignoring the public footpath towards Penhale and go past Dawn Cottage. At crossroads next to St Goran Church turn left, go past the phone box and follow the path on your right past Hillside cottage. At next crossroads, go straight over the road to the hidden public footpath (Carvinick 1/4m) in front of you next to the private property. Go across an open field and go past a vegetable garden.

(8) Cross over the next road following Hemmick Beach signpost towards the field, then skirt farm buildings to the right until you reach a road. Turn left onto this road and follows this way which bends right until Treveague Farm fork (signpost). Bear right at this fork and again right at the next one until you reach Bodrugan Cottage National Trust (be careful walking this small road with hidden curves!). The road bends sharply right and you finally reach the car park.(S/E)
