Views of Durham

This walk starts in Durham City Centre, but takes a more unusual path around the city affording views of the castle and cathedral from several view points. The walk descends from the Market Place to the river bank and then passes the law courts and prison, Durham University, Durham School, then passes the listed buildings on South Street before returning to the start via the new Riverwalk Development.

Description

(D/A) From the Gala Theatre turn right and walk towards the Market Place. Walking through the Market Place, continue into Saddler Street, then bear left down onto Elvet Bridge.

(1) At the bottom of Elvet Bridge, cross the road on the same side as the Swan and Three Cygnets Pub, then turn left and walk down the footpath at the side of the Marriott Hotel to Elvet Waterside, at the end of the footpath, turn right and walk along Elvet Waterside, there is a mix of old and new building here.

You will pass Baths Bridge on your left, then you will see the Dun Cow Statue and the Bandstand by the River Wear also on your left. Carry on straight ahead along the river.

When you reach the rowing club, follow the path around which joins Green Lane on your left. Follow Green Lane, you will pass a medical center on your left, you should now have walked in a loop reaching Old Elvet.

(2) At the road junction, cross the road and walk towards the metal gate in front of the courts, walk through these and walk in front of the court building, at the other side you will see Zen restaurant on your right and the Court Inn on your left, walk past the Court Inn and turn left into Elvet Crescent following the road around to the junction with the main road. Cross at the pedestrian crossing to Dunelm House (Durham University Students' Union) and then turn left up the steep slope into Church Street.

(3) Continue along Chuch Street passing St Oswald's Church to the traffic lights by Whitechurch and University Library. Turn right and walk along Quarryheads Lane, crossing the roundabout.

(4) Continue past Durham School to the sharp bend in the road, turn right into Grove Street, then turn left into South Street. Walk down South Street.

(5) At the end of South Street, turn right towards Millburngate Bridge, before the bridge, turn left beneath the building into the Riverwalk Shopping and Leisure Complex.

Follow the walkway around to Framwellgate Bridge (road bridge) passing the cinema. Turn right onto Framwellgate Bridge and cross it. At the far side, bear right up the slope, then turn left back into Millennium Square. (D/A)

Useful Information

  • Transport: For this walk the best place to park is in the Walkergate Multi-storey Car Park which has lifts to take you to the Gala Theatre level. Buses stop on the eastern end of Framwellgate Bridge from there a ramp will take you to Millennium Square and the Market Place.
  • Facilities: There are toilets in the Market Place, Prince Bishop's Car Park (off High Street) and Riverwalk. There are cafes and restaurants in Millennium Square, Market Place and Elvet Bridge. You will also pass the Court Inn, Zen and Whitechurch where you can stop for refreshments. There are further cafes and restaurants at Riverwalk.
  • Accessibility: This walk follows relatively flat terrain, however there are a couple of short steep inclines. The walk is mostly paved, however the footpath in South Street is narrow and the road is cobbled.
