West Looe River at low tide
The Giant's Hedge

Description

Park your car in Looe (Millpool car park).

(S/E) Follow the waterside heading to the forest.

(1) Turn left at the road, go up for 250 metres and bear right onto the public footpath (Watergate 1 1/4m, Giant's Hedge walk signpost). Keep the right path until a junction. Continue straight ignoring an ascending path on your left until you reach a fork.

(2) Bear left, go past a small footbridge and ignore steps on your right. At the next junction, Follow "Watergate" (blue and red marking dots ignoring alternative yellow route). Be ready for a few climbs and descents.

(3) At the second junction, follow only the red marking dot ( ignoring alternative blue route this time) following the narrow steep path which goes under the power line.

(4) You finally reach a signpost and two blocks of stones. Follow "Watergate 1/2m", go past those blocks until leading to the Giant's Hedged, stone-faced earth banks dating from the sixth century.

(5) Look at this beech trees enlacing the wall. Fascinating! The path leads to the road past a gate. Go down right, enter the village and turn right to the public footpath close next to the river. (notice Kilminorth woods signpost).

(6) Take this pleasant path along West Looe river for one mile following Looe Signpost. However be careful, at low tide, you can continue close to the river following but at high tide, you need to use the alternative route.
According to the tide, you go past close to the stairs on your right or you go down the stairs from the alternative route. Follow "Looe 2/3m", then you go past a picnic area and join a paved road. Continue straight in the direction of Looe. Past a wide gate, you reach the road leading to Millpool car park.(S/E)

Walk starts in Looe car park which is big, so would help if description said go to end of car park furthest away from Looe and the public toilets. Walk was mainly through forest so limited opportunity of views of river Looe. Good use of coloured dots made following path easy. Looe is good place to finish for facilities. When we walked along the low level route towards end of route (low tide so we could) fallen trees meant a bit of climbing over tree trunks required.

Ok walk, hard to go wrong.
