(S/E) From The Navigation INN door, facing the car park and canal, turn left, then bear left at the end of the car park to join the Peak Forest Tramway Trail. Pass a tramway arch on your left, and some houses on your right, and ignore a footbridge on the left. After 3⁄4 mile, beyond an industrial site with a millpond, you reach a road.
(1) Turn right and walk uphill to the centre of Whitehough village. At the road junction by the Old Hall, turn right, uphill, and cross the A6.
Take the first right (Eccles Terrace) and at the end follow the footpath up a driveway to the left. When this swings right into the property, keep along the footpath ahead. When you reach the road (Back Eccles Lane), turn left.
(2) At a crossroads, take the track on the right, following it as far as a gateway, beyond which head left to the road. Don’t go through the gate into the road, but instead walk up the grassy ridge to the rocky summit of Eccles Pike.
(3) From the top, drop off left to the road (Eccles Road), then turn right. Pass Top Eccles Farm then turn right into the next farm entrance, where a public footpath leads over a stile and up to and past a small disused quarry.
The path passes behind the farm buildings and through a gate into a field, where you head half-right to a road. Turn right and, after a few yards, leave the road via a stile on the left by a gate.
(4) Do not follow the obvious green quarry track off to the left and uphill, instead passing under the power lines and then swinging left. The path initially runs approximately parallel to the power lines then, beyond some oak trees bounded by a broken wall, turns right and heads firmly downhill.
(5) Having passed through a belt of trees, head straight down the field beyond, parallel to the right-hand wall and aiming to the right of the small quarry at the bottom. Beyond the quarry, go through a gate and follow the walled path and drive beyond to reach the road (Western Lane).
(6) Turn left and follow the road to a T-junction, where you turn right to cross the A6 and return to The Navigation INN. (S/E)
